The last of the 2009 Miss Washington Contestants were crowned yesterday afternoon during the Sweeper Pageant. The pageant was highly entertaining and filled with well qualified girls.

First runner up is Brenna Gardner-Brown and second runner up is Zandra Dennis.

The lineup was full of energetic dances, opera, show tunes, and some truly lively showmanship.

I was thoroughly impressed with all the young ladies and the counties they represented. Miss Washington 2008, Janet Harding was a wonderful M.C. even in a crunch and the audience was highly entertained. Miss Washington's Outstanding Teen Tori Knight sang 3 wonderful pieces of entertainment.

Charlotte Smith-Shores entertained us with a funny and on point performance.

On stage questions were answered with poise, intelligence and skill.

The evening gowns were marvelous and the young women truly wow'ed us.

I was particularly proud of my younger sister Tonie who entered the competition as a new comer, and first runner up to Miss Pierce County this year.

Another exciting aspect to this pageant was the amount of involvement and attendance by the class of 2007. Liz Lamb-Ferro helped with production, Charlotte Smith-Shores performed, I am currently the Pine Cone Princess Coordinator, and there were many others in attendance and supporting this program at their local levels. Devanni Partridge is Miss Seattle 2009, Angie Lewis is Miss Clark County 2009, Kelly Backous is a volunteer with Clark County, Kara-Anne Pedrini, Sarah Rosborough-Talbot was in attendance and is still in close contact with the program. It is so cool to see girls returning to support this program.

What a show this was! Congrats to Felicia, Tonie, and Cara for a job well done.

Pine Cone Princesses

The deadline is quickly approaching for those young ladies who want to participate in the Pine Cone Princess Program. The young ladies will be paired with a Miss Washington's Outstanding Teen contestant in a mentoring relationship. There are 2 major weekend commitments. Spring Forum May 1st-3rd where they will receive self-improvement workshops, attend a tea party and princess movie girls night. Then again in July during the Miss Washington and Miss Washington Outstanding Teen competitions, July 8th-11th they will learn their dance number, and perform ALL THREE nights of competition.

“Every young person is beautifully and wonderfully made and they hold the seeds of great promise in their hearts and minds.”

The Pine Cone Princess program is designed to benefit young ladies 7 to 11 years of age. It allows them to be exposed to the magical world of “Miss America” and “Miss Washington” before they are of competition age.

This is an opportunity to be involved with the Miss Washington’s Outstanding Teen
as each Princess serves and works with an Outstanding Teen mentor from across the state.

It is our intent to provide positive life experiences during Spring Forum and Pageant Week, to teach manners, etiquette, poise and confidence. These tools will enable our princesses to make good first impressions as they interact with those in their schools and communities.

As a result of participating in the Princess Program, your young lady will have practiced and applied skills that will serve her well in her teen and adult years.

Our adventure watching "Janet's Journey" to Miss America!

My husband Ben and I were able to attend the 2009 Miss America pageant in Las Vegas, at the Planet Hollywood. It was incredible to see the pageant so promoted, Kirsten Haglund's face was everywhere as were all 52 contestants. We were so impressed with the show and had a wonderful time cheering on our Miss Washington, Janet Harding. She represented us so well. We are so proud of her. We traveled with dear friend Mitchell and luckily he was more than willing to help us document our trip.

We landed in Vegas late morning, got checked into our hotel and made the most of our first day on "the strip." What fun!

In the end the state of Indiana got their first Miss America, and Katie Stam was crowned the new Miss America 2009.

Alicia Wallace Crowned 2009 Miss Auburn

I had a wonderful time this past February traveling with Janet and Peggy to the Miss Auburn 2009 pageant.

We had a great time backstage at the Auburn pageant and the young women were
wonderful.

All the beautiful contestants - there was a fabulous "Hollywood" theme.

The curtain at the Auburn pageant had a mind of it's own, and after playing her Miss America talent piece Janet was "attacked" by the curtain. I squealed in the wings and she just about couldn't pull herself together enough to head out to the audience for the second half of the show. We are all human - right?! :)

Announcement and Crowning of the new Miss Auburn - Alicia Wallace....

The Miss Auburn Scholarship Program crowned Alicia Wallace as the 2009 Miss Auburn on Jan. 31. Wallace, 23, is a senior at Seattle Pacific University and aspires to earn her M.B.A and move into urban planning. Her platform, Mentorships: Inspiring and Encouraging Growth in Young Women, will be furthered through the Big Brothers, Big Sisters programs.

The well-traveled Wallace will begin her service as Miss Auburn immediately and takes over for the outgoing Miss Auburn Cara Rudd.

Janet's Journey - Red Carpet Arrival

Janet just finished her "Red Carpet Arrival" wearing a black and blue pencil skirted dress.

She was wonderful as always and even got pulled for an interview with "Extra" who was there covering the event!

This morning she checked in her wardrobe, had a fitting, ate a HUGE breakfast of chocolate chip pancakes (That's our girl!) with Peggy and truly began her journey with the Miss America Organization.

Janet's Journey - Departure for Miss America

Janet Harding, Miss Washington 2008, has headed off on her journey to Miss America. She looked calm, collected, and beautiful as she left Seatac. She rode in style in a white stretch limo with state director Peggy Miller.

She arrived at Seatac greeted by state director Patti Belik, volunteer Charlie Curry-Vantramp, The Schuberts a CMN family, and lots of family and friends.

Piled high with her giraffe print luggage, a sponsored gift, they loaded 2 carts to overflowing. Pictured below, Janet's dedicated and loving father- Ron Harding, with cart one.

Pinecone Princess Coordinator

I am so thrilled and honored to have been officially offered the postion of Pincecone Princess Coordinator for the Miss Washington Scholarship Organization. This year the Miss Washington pageant and the Miss Washington's Outstanding Teen program will be taking place at the same time. This means that the Pincone Princess will have a chance to interact with Teen and Miss contestants.

What an exciting prospect! Quality young women and teenagers mentoring girls from across the state.

There are still many decisions to be made, but I am looking forward to taking on the job and seizing the opportunity to establish these fabulous mentoring relationships!

Back to School!

It is so good to be back at school! Back to work and a regular routine. I missed the kids and staff so very much. Plus I think I am much less "Needy" as a wife now that I am not home all day on my own. :)

The kids are finally falling into a routine and it feels good for all of us. A big change for me was finding my new identity here at school as "Mrs. Jacobson." The kids have already gotten used to it for the most part. Although I sometimes feel like a split personality., being called "Miss Duchemin" in the bathroom/hallway by a student from last year and then "Mrs. Jacobson" in my classroom by this year's students. But I love it! I am truly a Mrs. and get to hear it everyday.

I just started Jazzercise with some young ladies from my small group and it is so much fun! I am really excited. However, it does remind me of my pageant days and how "not a dancer" I really am.

Ben and I moved furniture this weekend and worked around the house, we've started attending a small group in our neighborhood and are having so much fun meeting the people in our community.

We are looking for some more consistent work for Ben and maybe something with benefits. It's amazing what becomes important when you are a "grown up." :) If you know of something, let me know!

Life truly is falling into a wonderful routine with fun surprises here and there. I am looking forward to the pageant season as I plan to do some judging in the Miss America Outstanding Teen program this year - let me know if you need a judge. I've also been keeping up with Janet (Our Miss Washington 2008) and her schedule. She truly is a remarkable woman. It means so much to continue to be a part of this incredible organization.

Campin' and Crabs

The weekend started with a birthday celebration for my sister - a pirate theme! With booty and eye patches. What a blast.

Then ... a campin' trip filled with crabs. We took some good friends out to Seabeck to go camping a couple of weekends ago. What a time we had.

First after setting up the tents we hit the water to go crabbing. The gentlemen had dropped to pots early that morning so first we hit up Pleasant Cove for lunch. I had a great chicken pesto sandwich, but the French Dip was to die for. (Yes Carol, I still LOVE them!)

After lunch we headed to pull up the pots. Which... were filled with 12 crabs! Back to the campsite we went where we boiled the crabs, played a little Phase 10 and then ate to our heart's content.

It truly was a feast. And lucky for us, my sister was there and likes to crack but doesn't like to eat it as much. :)

In the morning we made breakfast over the coleman stove.

A laid back evening at home, filled with more crab and games was the perfect conclusion to our camping extravaganza!

Whirlwind

I've had a whirlwind four months since my last post! Including completing my first year teaching, getting married the day after school let out, and now working and playing the summer away.

I have hosted kid's camps out of our home for 3 weeks this summer, worked in our yard, and found that settling into "real life" as I like to call it, suits me very well.

The kids have been great, and have learned a lot. The first week we studied Zoo animals and took a field trip to the zoo. The second week we examined the human body and that took us to the Pacific Science Center and during this past week they have been exploring the performing arts and are learning monlogues and 2 dances! I'm having a ball.

One exciting thing that happened this July was that my best friend, Janet Harding, became Miss Washington 2008. I get to have the chance to follow her through her journey and in a way experience it myself. God knew his plan for my life, and I am so content and thrilled with the outcome of my pageanting days.

Pageant you ask... no more competing because of the new last name. ;) (and marriage!) but I am looking to do some judging in the teen program this pageant season, taking the necessary steps to later be involved in judging in the Miss program.

Wedding, marriage, and life at home with Ben is all I could have hoped for. He is the most amazing husband and partner.

He has the most incredible work ethic, takes care of me, encourages my dreams, and we are making quite the life together in our little home in Poulsbo.

School wrapped up nicely, and quickly for me (since the wedding took place the next day). Here we are at "graduation" a few days before school let out for the summer.

But I had incredible classroom volunteers who helped me get it clean and ready to be the school's tour room for the summer. I felt great leaving Friday after field day and heading to my facial. Then that night we had our wedding rehearsal and the next day embarked on the incredible journey of a wedding and honeymoon.

Check out our wedding website to see more wedding photos! What a day, and it was all made possible by family. I had no wedding planner or coordinator and the day of, was truly stress free due to all the family members and friends who lent a hand! It truly was all we could have imagined, and more.

I can't quite believe it, but there is only two more days to go.

I will only have the title of Miss Poulsbo until Saturday, March 29th. However I will always carry the honor of having been Miss Whatcom County 2005 and Miss Poulsbo 2007. Having been a top ten, people's choice winner at Miss WA in 2005 and the second runner up to Elyse Umemoto (who was 3rd in the nation) in 2007. Plus I was given so many honors at state this past year.

The highlight of my year was receiving word from the National program, when I returned from Miss WA that I had won the national community service award for Washington State!

The other highlight is the relationships I have built with two incredible ladies that I have come to love. Molly Lemmon, my pageant little sister, and Megan Hornbuckle - Miss Kitsap and my partner in crime! I am so lucky to have been blessed with these relationships. They have been a gift from God.

Molly we were meant to be together. I am so blessed to have you as my little sister!

The Lord knew I needed this year. I needed to connect to my community. I have found my home, which is something I've said a million times - but is SO true.

Some of my favorite hometown past times include but are not limited to:
~Wednesday night BINGO at the Sons of Norway
~Walking the boardwalk in downtown
~Coffee at Latte on your Way - I had to abandon Starbucks because they no longer have almond syrup but I am not bitter any more since it led me to a new local stand!
~ Dinner and a movie with my fiancé Ben here in town
~ Taking Ipa on a walk with Ben at night and seeing our town all lit up

And one future thing I can't wait for is getting married on Liberty Bay! We just couldn't do it any other way.

Democratic Caucus

I will begin by stating that I understand that some will say, "This is not the place for her to be posting this information." I disagree. I post this blog so that people know what my life is like as Miss Poulsbo, and also as me - Alex Duchemin. Miss Poulsbo should be active in her community and in her government whenever possible, no matter her views. I hope with that said, you continue reading.

I, Alex Duchemin, participated in the Democratic Caucus today... Yes, I am a declared Democrat -at least with Obama as a candidate I am - and I was so proud to participate in the Democratic Caucus today, as a supporter for Obama.

But to be honest the real reason I am posting this is to encourage all of you young people - especially young women - to get registered to vote, and to vote in this primary election if you still have your absentee ballot!

Also, I want to stress that when voting in a primary election, by absentee ballot you MUST mark the party you are affiliated with by marking the party's box by the signature line - it's on the flap of your envelope. If you do not mark a party your vote WILL NOT COUNT. They will throw it away.This is only true in the primary election and it does not have to effect how you vote in the final presidential election.

Register if you haven't, vote if you still can, and learn something new about our system this year. You will be impressed.

I also challenge you, look beyond the moral issues and examine the parties political views on education, environmental issues, international relations along with their views of taxes and where that money goes.

Ask yourself, who can inspire Americans to get behind a cause, and who can make a difference and do it quickly.You might be surprised who you end up voting for. I know I was. But I found a candidate that represents what I believe politically and I am willing to take on the moral issues myself among the people I can directly effect.

Most importantly get involved in your government, it is a priviledge and an honor that we can!

Miss Iowa (swimwear- for those of you watching Reality Check she was the blonde with the bangs that was in the "bottom three" :)) and Miss Rhode Island (talent - baton twirling that had the "ice skater" evening gown on Reality Check) took the Preliminary Awards at First Night of Competition.

These are introductions, it looks to me that they wore shirts that were the color of their teams from Reality Check. That is helpful to identify favorites!

Miss Massachusetts, Valerie Amaral, was the winner in the second night of talent at Miss America. She is a University Scholar at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. She earned a $2,000 scholarship for her vocal performance of "Anyway."
Miss MIchigan, Kirsten Haglund, was last night's swimsuit winner. Kirsten, a student at the University of Cincinnati's College Conservatory of Music, is the youngest contestant in this year's pageant. Interestingly, she is the granddaughter of a former Miss Michigan! (I also have a feeling she could be one of the last standing on Saturday night.)

Miss America - TLC - Reality Check

Well seeing my last blog was posted over a month ago was quite a "reality check." That play on words is a tribute to the TLC show - Miss America Reality Check that has aired the past 2 Friday nights, and still has 2 episodes left. They will air this Friday and next Friday, to be followed Saturday (January 26th) by a LIVE broadcast of the Miss America Competition.

Take the show in stride. Know that the Miss America Organization is a self-betterment program and it really achieves that goal. They give scholarships and provide an outlet for young women to learn and to lead. I believe in the organization and what it stands for and am simply enjoying the show knowing it is not so much a "reality". But boy has it brought in the viewers!

Check out TLC's website for more information, you can choose a contestant on their site and the highest scoring girl (chosen by America) who does not make the judges cut for the top 15 will be named the 16th contestant and be featured in the following phases of competition.

Go Elyse Ummemoto our Miss Washington 2007!

This past weekend was a busy one for me. I had 3 appearances. Two on Saturday and one on Sunday. On Saturday I was a part of the two-fold event that celebrated the start of Poulsbo's centennial year. The morning event was filled with our rich history and was a tribute to the long standing members of our community. A reenactment of the first town council meeting had me in stitches; and stories told by Muriel, a 91 year old resident of Poulsbo, brought me to tears. I also had the chance to share my thoughts on being the 54th Miss Poulsbo to carry the title, a job which I take very seriously.

Again, I was overwhelmed and brought to tears. I feel so lucky to call Poulsbo home and to be here representing our community in a part of our centennial year. Thank you Poulsbo for the honor. This community is so rich with history and a sense of belonging.

I will upload some photos later this afternoon or evening from the event and the Centennial wine tasting that followed that evening. Over 400 tickets were sold and we got the chance to taste wine that was created especially to honor this, our 100th year as an official city with Municipal status.

Sunday I participated in a farewell fashion show for our Miss Washington - Elyse Ummemoto. 8 of the 2007 contestants were in attendance and displayed a favorite appearance outfit and an evening gown. Miss Washington showcased her Miss America wardrobe and was even honored with a visit from the UW quarterback! She is a HUGE Dawgs fan!

Below are some photos from that event. Each 2007 contestant selected a "typical" or "favorite" appearance outfit and an evening gown to showcase. I had to do it in true Poulsbo form so I selected the traditional Norwegian Bunad that I wear to most of my appearances and my lime green evening gown that I wore both at Miss Poulsbo and Miss Washington this past year. Poulsbo is the only local Miss America program that has a traditional costume and I get lots of questions from the other ladies like, "Why do you wear that thing?" We cleared up some of those questions at the fashion show and they got to hear a bit about the history of our bunad that has been passed for over 15 years from Miss Poulsbo to Miss Poulsbo.

Like always, I was honored to wear the bunad and represent Poulsbo at this statewide event. Good luck to our Miss Washington as she heads off to Miss America, be looking for her Saturday, January 26th on TLC!

Yulefest 2007

It was truly a magical affair. With a snow covered bunad and snowflakes on eyelashes I joined my pageant little sister Molly Lemmon and chaperones Tina Lemmon and Amanda Cheetham in the Klevstad Pavillion at 4pm in below freezing temperatures.

The ground covered in a sheet of white, above the water hovered a blanket of mist, and people were bundled from toe tip to nose tip hoping to keep out some of the cold. You can count on the fact that I had a few extra layers hidden under my bunad and I also donned my Norwegian sweater.

The band and choirs were unable to make it due to the inclement weather, the viking ship sprung a leak, the bonfire had to be covered in a blue tarp until the official "lighting" and the town Christmas tree was only 2/3 lit. But despite so many setbacks and slush covered streets there was a pile of people there to watch, Sons of Norway Carolers, darling children dressed in everything from Norwegian bunads to snow coats and mittens, and of course the beautiful Lucia Bride was there as well. Our host opened the evening and we immediately began the festivities. I shared briefly about the Miss Poulsbo program and Molly got to introduce herself including the fun fact that after 53 years of Miss Poulsbo's and over 10 years of having little sisters, Molly is the first Miss Poulsbo's little sister to come along side "her Miss" and wear a bunad too.Then we danced around the traditionally decorated Chrsitmas Tree. I had to watch the children and Carolers around me to catch on, but boy was it a blast. My "magic hand" was even instrumental in lighting the town tree.

I was delighted to carry a 2 year old girl, bundled in a snow suit, during some of the dancing and then later I got to join hands with one of my own 1st graders, pictured below. :)

It was a beautiful, but cold, night and I was honored to be asked to become apart of the tradition. I can't wait until next year, I'll be front and center to see Miss Poulsbo 2008 light the tree in the very same bunad I wore this year. What a wonderful town we live in that is so rich with tradition.

Uffda, time for bed. I have a classroom full of first graders, who are full of energy and waiting for their teacher to join in, and that is just a few short hours away. Thanks for reading.

This past June I had the privilege of watching Lindsay Casmaer win the title of Miss Missouri 2008 and if you recall the blog she was who I had "chosen" to win. :) http://www.missmissouri.org/

The Missouri Pageant has been a highlight of my year as Miss Poulsbo. The program coordinators were welcoming and gracious and I certainly had a chance to grow closer to Miss Kitsap 2007 Megan Hornbuckle.

I also got to see over 20 incredible ladies compete in 4 nights of preliminaries and a final night of competition. The show was incredible and the competition stiff.

I am sad to report that just this past week Abigail was killed in a tragic car crash at the young age of 21. I remember watching her compete and it breaks my heart to hear of her death. I am praying for her immediate and extended family, along with her fiancé as they grieve this incredible loss. Scott, age 21, of Kahoka, MO, died Tuesday, November 20, 2007, the result of an automobile accident one mile east of Bethany, MO. Abby was born September 30, 1986, at Wayne, NE, the oldest child of Mike and Sue Shepherd Scott.

Survivors include her parents, Mike and Sue Scott of Kahoka, MO; brother, Michael Scott, a cadet at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO; a sister, Elsa Scott of Kahoka, MO; grandmothers, Lorna Shepherd of Ainsworth, IA and Arlene Scott of Fort Dodge, IA; aunts and uncles: Robert Shepherd and Tom Shepherd, both of Washington, IA, Bill and Kitty Shepherd of Knoxville, IA, Dick and Deb Shepherd of Washington, IA, Rick and Sue Scott of Otho, IA, Craig and Paula Scott of Hudsonville, MI, Cindy and Leo Frehse of Sturgis, SD, and great uncle George Hart of New Berlin, IL; as well as cousins and other relatives. Abby was planning to marry Patrick Kohler of Belton, MO, in the future.

She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Robert “Shep” Shepherd and Ernest E. Scott. Education and the fine arts were an important part of her life. Before she was in grade school, she was involved in theater, music and drama as well as sports and academic activities. She transferred to Clark Co. R-1 High School her senior year from Fremont, Nebraska when her parents purchased The Media in Kahoka. At Clark Co. R-1, she was a member of the Campus Bowl, Choir, Show Choir, Band, Tall Flags, Pep Band, Track and Cross-Country, Drama Club and recipient of the ACT Award.

At Fremont High School in Fremont, Nebraska, Abby was active in Student Government, band and choir, and competed on the swimming and diving team. She enjoyed target archery and technical rock climbing. She also loved working with animals as a volunteer for the Dodge County Humane Society and through an Explorer program at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha. She was a 2004 Clark County R-1 Honor graduate and graduated from Southeast Iowa Community College at Keokuk. Abby was currently a senior Political Science Major at Northwest State University in Maryville, MO, where she was also a member of the ROTC Sweethearts.

Abby was the Clark County Coordinator for the Big Bros. and Big Sisters and worked at the Clark County License Office when she was home. The past year she had been employed by the Maryville Chamber of Commerce and License Bureau.

She was the 2003-2004 Old Settler’s Queen and the current Miss Northeast Missouri, and competed in the Miss Missouri Pageant in June, 2007. She was active in the Church of the Nazarene in Keokuk and participated in church choirs and theater since she was a little girl. She had been in several of the Great River Player productions in Keokuk. Abby loved sunflowers, collecting “Cow Parade" cows and a good political debate. Her family had a special love for each other.

Funeral services were held Saturday, November 24, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Kahoka with Rev. Kenneth Beckmann and Pastor Dana Jurgensen officiating. Burial was in the Kahoka Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Abby Scott Memorial Scholarship, Great River Players, or the Keokuk (IA) Church of the Nazarene.

Holidays...

I love the holidays and I could not be more delighted to be a part of the Yule Log lighting that is taking place in downtown this weekend. Saturday at 3pm (December 1st) I will be at the Klevstad Pavillion to help light the Yule log. Come visit me and my little sister Molly Lemmon and enjoy the festivities. Downtown is looking so festive, especially with a cup of coffee in hand and with a visit to Santa's hut under your belt. Oh... and don't forget to drop off your letter to Santa!

This is a picture of my staff at Christ the King Academy. I feel so lucky to be working with these wonderful people this Holiday Season, it was certainly something I am thankful for. Enjoy and I will write more again soon.

In 2005 I was part of an incredible Miss America Scholarship Program in Whatcom County. I made some of my closest friends, and grew a great deal. Many people ask me how I was ready for this year. How I did so well? How did I know I wanted to compete again?

Well it is because of a program with incredible committee members who are committed, a local director who cared about me and a community that embraced me in Whatcom County.

The school year is off to a grand start!

Well here I am, having written very little in the past months, wondering where to start. I've had several "avid blog readers" ask for a post, so here it is, to satiate the need. :) A bit of my life.

My school and classroom is my second home and I could not ask for a better family. They have embraced me and I have truly found my place.

I will begin with the biggest and the best "detail" of my life. I have started my career! And in the middle of pageant madness it is stable, rejuvenating, and exactly where God wanted me.
I am a first grade teacher at Christ the King Academy with the greatest group of children I could have asked for.

I am not "Miss Poulsbo" to them; instead I am "Miss Duchemin" their teacher and very little has ever felt this good or satisfying in my entire life.

I get to school each morning with a renewed sense that I am doing what God created me to do. I think back to "college days" when I was lonely and wondering what would come next for me. I remember days where I would go without being hugged and I'd think to myself, you are supposed to get at least 10 hugs a day, and here I am with not a single one. Now, I get at least 15 hugs a day from 15 first grade friends.

My family (pictured here is three generations on my mother's side) have been a huge support and even lend a helping hand, on a regular basis, in my classroom. Mrs. McGuire and Mrs. Duchemin (my aunt and mother) are absolutely adored by the students.

Miss Poulsbo adventures are great, and the best part is being with my "Miss Poulsbo's little sister" Molly Lemmon. She has grown almost a foot since we met last Spring, and she is the most wonderful addition to my life. The other added bonus is my friend Megan Hornbuckle, Miss Kitsap 2007, who has been like a life ring in the middle of a rampant sea.
We have learned so much, and have made a great team. Whoever it was that first emphasized to me that the young women who were selected as Miss Kitsap and Miss Poulsbo must be team players, was absolutely correct. We are a team and need each other.
We took a break after Miss Washington and did very few appearances. With the holiday season fast approaching, we have done a select few events.

We recently served at the Martha and Mary Heritage Gala and here we are pictured with Mayor Kathryn Quade sporting our fabulous red dresses and Megan with a new doo. :) It was a black and white affair and boy did Megan and I serve as the cherry on top the sundae.

I was also recently an honored guest at the First Lutheran Church's lutefisk luncheon last weekend. I was accompanied by Tina Lemmon (Molly's mom) and Miss Molly Lemmon herself. No, we did not taste lutefisk, but we got to sample some mean Swedish meatballs.

Next weekend there is the Sons of Norway Lutefisk dinner and soon after that I get to be a part of the Yule Log lighting ceremony in downtown Poulsbo.

Many want to know, "What of Miss Washington?" "How was the experience?" and to be honest all I can say is read the blogs from those days. It was a dream come true and even better the second time around.

I made wonderful friends and we have an incredible Miss Washington. AND Miss America will be on TLC this year! That is exciting news. I want to emphasize that having started my first teaching job, I am almost completely debt free and that is only after earning over $16,000 from the Miss America Organization. Please if you know a young woman who might be interested, or even really skeptical, feel free to pass on my email. misspoulsbo2007@gmail.com Encourage her to visit the Miss Poulsbo website, or even the Miss Washington website for other counties where she may be eligible. This experience will can be life changing.

Life changing is... having bought a home... living near famlily... having started a life... HERE in Poulsbo. I am so lucky to call this home. I am near the ones I love and get to see them every day. Friday nights are full of walks in downtown, movies at the local theatre and dinner with extended family.

This weekend we brought in the holiday season with a Pumpkin Party, good food, a trip to the Pumpkin Patch and great friends.

I am so blessed to call Poulsbo my home and am proud to represent this incredible community. It is time to wrap up, but I long for our community to know that there is a proud young woman out there, singing its praises to anyone who will listen.

I hope this rambling is a bit satisfying for those looking for "the scoop" and if not, I will be back! I will have more to share and I'd love to continue my musings another day.

From Miss Poulsbo to Miss Duchemin

Rom 408 here I come!

Welcome to Miss Duchemin's first grade class! That's right, I got a teaching job at Christ the King Academy and I start August 27th. I am collecting things for my classroom now and as soon as I am done working at the coffee stand on August 15th I will set to work on my room.
If you have any children's books, shelves, school supplies or educational games/posters, or really anything along those lines let me know! I am certainly a great charity case and my first graders will appreciate it!

Pillows, bean bags, dressups... I had to change my entire mindset from 4th-6th grade thinking to 1st grade thinking so I am in need of all kinds of things.

I can't believe I am teacher! It is quite the responsiblity. I feel a bit like a deer in the headlights. I give a parent orientation on August 30th and students are in school on September 4th. What do I say? What will my morning routines be? How do I start?

What an adventure. I would love to hear your favorite school memories or things your favorite teachers did. Do help!

Things are settling down...

Well, things are finally starting to settle down. With Miss Washington completed; a trip to George, WA for Creation Music Festival; and some days at work under my belt I am starting to feel semi-normal again.

I still need to settle into my new home a bit more and spend some quality time with those I love, so that they no longer feel neglected; but I am truly seeing the light at the end of this pageant tunnel.

I am looking forward to 9 months as Miss Poulsbo; continuing with North Kitsap Adapted Aquatics; and fulfilling other "said duties", but I am really looking forward to LIFE!

I am applying for teaching jobs for this fall and praying that God will provide, believing in faith that it is all in his hands.

Plus I just started a new business venture that I am very excited about. I recently, because of pageant, started using Mary Kay products and I am so thrilled to now be an Independent Beauty Consultant with the company.

Roughin' it and exciting news!

After heading off for a week of "scrubin' it" at camp as a high school counselor and Division Director (overseeing the other high school counselors and campers) I was ready for the real world of showers and looking lovely.

It was wonderful to see old camp friends and during a week full of archery, riflery, horsemanship, and whittling; my class entitled "Princess Party" was a welcomed reprieve for those little girls who just need a bit extra attention. We made princess crafts (foam crowns and door hangers), painted picture frames that included a print of them wearing one of my three crowns. They had tea parties, learned Princess Principles, performed a song for the camp entitled "Aristocrats," and memorized verses that taught us, "He is the King of kings and Lord of lords" and that we are "Children of God" therefore we are "Daughters of the King" and "that makes us princesses".

Our Princess Principles were as follows:
1. Princesses always say, "thank you."
2. Princesses love God and love people.
3. Princesses are always polite.
4. Princesses try everything once.
5. Princesses share of themselves.

The girls were delighted to get to see and wear my crowns and they believed the highlight was getting my autograph.

What a delight to get to share my title and experience with young ladies in that way.

I also did a wonderful appearance at a retirement center in Moses Lake with Miss Moses Lake, Sara Rosborough (our 2007 Miss Congeniality), Elizabeth Lamb-Ferro, Miss Spokane, and my teammate Megan Hornbuckle, Miss Kitsap. We performed for them, including my Miss Poulsbo talent, a bilingual monologue called, "The Coat of Many Colors" and my Miss Washington piece a vocal performance entitled, "All For You" from Seussical the Musical. The residents thoroughly enjoyed the performances and receiving autographs. Sara's adopted grandmother was there wearing a crown and sporting a photograph of Sara on her walker. What a priceless opportunity. Thank you to the group in Moses Lake for setting it up.

We then headed to see Charlotte Smith - Miss Tri Cities 2006 and 3rd runner up to Miss Washington - give up her title. She wowed us with vocal performances (The Star Spangled Banner, a Rascal Flatts song, and my favorite "Legacy" by Nicole Nordeman) along with her Miss Washington violin performance. She was an incredible Miss Tri Cities and will go so far no matter what she puts her mind to.

Congratulations to the new Miss Tri Cities, whose name escapes me at this moment, she is a well deserving, eloquent, graceful, and talented (saxophone player) young woman. I look forward to watching you compete at state next year!

Now that I am back to reality I was going through mail and found a letter from Miss America.
It read, "Alexander, congratulations on being the recipient of the Miss America Community Service Scholarship..."

Now if you watched Miss Washington you would understand my confusion at receiving this letter. My well-deserving friend Tina Faulkner had been awarded this scholarship on the Miss Washington stage that night. She has worked in her platform for over 5 years so of course her being given this award came as no surprise to me.

After getting the letter I contacted the state Executive Director for clarification. She relayed to me that I had actually won the award. The state will still award Tina the $1,000 but I was thrilled to find out that I was actually chosen by the Miss America Scholarship board as the recipient of this incredible honor.

Going into the experience the community service award is the one award that I truly desired to win. It is an honor because it is awarded from a national board but also because of why you receive the award. I submitted an essay about my platform, "Unifying the Differently Abled: Adapted Aquatics" and two letters of recommendation. One came from a member of the North Kitsap School Board who had helped me secure the location for my North Kitsap Adapted Aquatics Program and the other from a Red Cross Coordinator who came and trained my volunteers.

The letters were so generous and spoke of the ladies faith in my program and in what we are accomplishing here in Kitsap County to "Unify the Differently Abled."

I am so incredibly honored to have received this award and congratulate Tina Faulkner on all she has done for her "Big Brothers - Big Sisters" platform in her community.

I can't believe it has taken me this long to sit down to a computer and update you all on my "Miss Washington Experience".

That’s right! I walked away this year with the Swimsuit award, People’s Choice, and the title of 2nd runner up!

God is so good. He knew exactly the way it was supossed to be. Tina Faulkner deserved to have the chance to go to Sweeper and is my dear friend. She was Miss Whatcom County 2004 and crowned me Miss Whatcom County 2005.

Our new Miss WA 2006 Elyse Umemoto will do our state proud. She gives credit where it is due, is flexible and gracious, and is absolutely beautiful. I know that God has great things in store for her this year.

The week was a whirlwind and I cannot believe it is over. I am now preparing for a week at camp and had a job interview for a 1st grade position at the local private school. Be praying, I need a teaching job.

The two opening numbers were “Dream Girls,” and “One Night Only” and you see me pictured below in both.

Here are 3 of the Top Ten - Myself, Kelly Backous and Shannon Touhy as we await the announcement of the Top Five. Shannon and I were both named to the top 5 so in these moments I was simply reminding myself, “I am in His hands, and His will will prevail.”

A huge difference this year from the last time I competed at state, or even for my local title was that I was not nervous. Literally I walked out onto stage calmly and ready for whatever might happen. I truly wanted to be Miss Washington this year but the Lord had something better. I walked away with no regrets and certainly no disappointment. I get to remain as Miss Poulsbo and pursue new endeavors.

Pageantry has served it’s purpose in my life. I am a more finished and well-rounded person, I have so many connections, many new friendships and have made $15,000 in scholarships. I am left with only $1,000 left to pay off in student loans after 5 years of college!

Yesterday’s pace really picked up. We started the morning quarantined (The Beta Group that is) while the Alpha group prepared for interview. We headed off to the Farmer’s Market where we shopped (I bought cherries) and signed autographs.

I even met two little girls from Poulsbo. Their picture is posted here. Their grandparents go to Christ Memorial Church do they knew some family!

Then we headed back to our rooms where I took a nap and prepared for interview. After getting ready physically once I went to the first holding room I got my mouth going (talked a bunch) with Bev White and then in the second holding room I prayed with Sara Rosborough and Elyse Ummemoto the only two contestants after me. I also listened to some worship songs that were a great reminder that this is all in God’s hands and far beyond what I can do on my own.

I spent time giving my heart and dreams back to him and by the time I entered the interview room I was ready.

I came out feeling fabulous! I answered all their questions, had them laughing and nailed my closing statement. They know me a bit better now and have a glimpse into my heart for children, the Children’s Miracle Network partnership and also my opinion on some major issues.

After interviews we were hurried off to dress rehearsal where, as usual, there was a lot of “hurry up and wait”. We got through our talents twice and the whole show once so it was a success.

I feel ready, and today we have some rehearsal, lunch with our directors and then off to the show for hair and makeup.

The show begins at 7:30 and you can count on the fact that I will be ready.

The Outback and Boat-ride

This site is incredible.

Today was so incredibly laid back. After our viewing of the Pantageous and running thru the dance a couple of times we headed back to the hotel and got ready for our evening outing.

We headed out to The Outback and had an incredible meal that was complimentary! I of course had a salad, the best “baby green beans” I have ever had, and a delicious house salad. Strawberry lemonade and coffee too!

Then the boat trip. This even is really for the girls. One big “photo opt.” and a chance to just be girls. So much of our time here is spent “being on” that this event is our opportunity to be more ourselves.

I spent some wonderful time up on the bow of the boat taking pictures, evidenced below, and so delightful reading time with Tina Faulkner – Miss Columbia and Sarah Starr – Miss Olympic underneath the boat.

Much of this week is dependent upon reading. Between current events, your favorite Miss America (whom I am reading about now – mine is Heather Whitestone, Miss America 1995), information about the state platform (Educational Service District 113) and the national platform Children’s Miracle Network there is much to know.

The reading seems to be never ending. Sarah and I discovered that we both are book worms and would read under the covers as little girls with our flashlights so that our mothers would not send us to sleep. I love that I was not the only little girl doing this. Sarah is an incredible young woman she is a Second Lieutenant in the Army and will serve in Iraq next fall.

First glimpse of the Pantageous!

The Pantageous is so grandiose!

We rehearsed there for a bit today but rehearsal this morning got canceled since our group of young ladies learned the dances so quickly.

That led to a later morning workout (the day before it was at 5:50am) so I joined in. The YMCA across the street is beautiful. 15 of us went and then headed to Starbucks afterwards.

After showers, voice practice, and getting "all dolled up" we loaded a U-Haul full of our competition wardrobes and headed to the Pantageous.

There is no way not to feel like Miss America herself on that stage. We truly are "Dream Girls". Running through the opening-number in our dresses put most of us at ease and then the figuring out staging instilled a lot more confidence in all of us.

Now we have a short break in our rooms, then The Outback for dinner and a boat ride with just the contestants!

It's hard not to feel better this year since so much pressure is taken off by having learned the dances so quickly.

I need to do some reading and then get ready but thank you for reading and know I am doing my best and thoroughly enjoying my "Miss Washington week".

After I posted the comment about the Miss Washington contestants being shuttled around like Lemmings I figured you might want to know more about lemmings.

Lemmings are small rodents, usually found in or near the Arctic, in tundra biomes. Together with the voles and muskrats, they make up the subfamily Arvicolinae (also known as Microtinae), which forms part of the largest mammal radiation by far, the superfamily Muroidea, which also includes the rats, mice, hamsters, and gerbils.
Lemmings weigh from 30 to 112 grams (1–4 oz) and are about 7 to 15 centimetres (2.75 – 6 in) long. They generally have long, soft fur and very short tails. They are herbivorous, feeding mostly on leaves and shoots, grasses, and sedges in particular, but also on roots and bulbs. Like many rodents' teeth, their incisors grow continuously, allowing them to exist on much tougher forage than would otherwise be possible.

Rehearsals are 75% finished for the day.

We also fit in a visit to the Good Samaritan Therapy Unit where we were given a tour and learned about their incredible facility. They create adapted items for children with disabilities, provide occupational and physical therapy, and have some incredible technology that has provided vast amounts of insight to doctors like "Dr. Dave" Embrey, PhD, PT. He is a self-proclaimed "longhorn" (you will see evidence of that below) and gives many of these informational tours to all kinds of groups.

As he shared information with us his eyes welled up with tears and at one point when I exclaimed that I had goose bumps because of an inspiring story he was telling us he said he did too. I am impressed by a man who still after many years of doing his job and informing others about it, still gets goose bumps.

We got to meet several children who are outpatients at the therapy center and it was apparent that we made their day. The ten contestants that went bombarded them with autographs and photo time and I had a delightful conversation about Spiderman and Shrek (which I might add was quite informational) and met two sets of siblings! What a blessing to see the good things that are being done for children with disabilities!

Dancing is coming along well and we are pretty much finished with learning the numbers which has freed us up some and will hopefully alleviate some stress during rehearsals at the Pantageous, and maybe even allow for an additional talent rehearsal? I am hoping. :)

Other than that the rush us from here to there and we behave much like a group of lemmings.

Monday Morning at Miss Washington 2007

Well, here I am with time to write. You may ask, “How is there time to bog?” Well this morning is unique since I woke up, for the first shower, to NO water pressure. It was promised in 10-15 minutes; so when it hadn’t “arrived” I called down again and now they have promised 30min.

This would not usually be such a problematic thing for me, but last night we were told that we are NOT “to look like ragamuffins at rehearsal” because the video-grapher, photographer, and press will be there. J

Therefore, the twenty-two young ladies will be in a bit of a tizzy as they realize there is not water.

I will you a bit more about some of the details, while I have the time. Working out was ruled out last night. I decided this time around that I would use weights and an exercise ball in the hallway for the necessary workout regime and save myself an hour or more of sleep. The gals who are working out had to meet at 5:50 to go to the YMCA around the corner and were not returning until nearly 7:30. I decided that the bad might outweigh the good for me if I took that option.

In rehearsal we received our shoes and earrings for the opening number and I got lucky. My shoes fit fairly well and the earrings are lovely. Debbie who has choreography is incredible, and will make each and every contestant, including me, successful on the nights of competition.

The water has returned to the pipes of the Sheraton and I need to read my Bible but before I go I wanted to share the daily Bible verse that was texted to my phone this morning. It was a great reminder that this is all in God’s hands!

Day One at Miss Washington 2007

This won’t be posted until tomorrow because I am not sure how to connect to the internet in my room at the Sheraton. However, there is still a lot to tell. What an adventure already.

Arrival started off with not having much time to get ready, although despite previous trends, I was on time for the duck line up and roll call.

“Momma Duck” is the lady who corrals and cares for all of the twenty-two contestants. With each scheduled event we gather together and count off, then head as a group to the next item on the agenda.

After descending the stairs at the Sheraton, to meet the mayor and have several photo opportunities we were able to watch 6 Miss Washington Alumni perform and update us on their lives. This part of the week is so special, you get the see the sisterhood of Miss Washington’s and the lasting beauty and talent that is INSIDE each one of the Miss Washington’s.

Thank you to all those friends and family who showed up. Momma and Papa, there are no words to describe the kind of support you have provided and all you have taught me – Thank you! Janet and Myrna it meant so much to have you here, thank you for diving into this process with me. Bethany, thank you for coming all the way from Reno. The adventure just wouldn’t be complete without your enthusiasm! Auntie and Uncle your goodies put a smile on my face and a reminder in my heart. And, Ben… despite the fact that you were not here in body I have “Jamin” and he is keeping me company. Thank you for your thoughtfulness and for truly caring about my well-being.

My family and I were able to sit with Elyse Ummemoto’s family and that was an absolute delight. After another opportunity for photographs we said farewell to family and friends and headed to a rehearsal.

This was a total relief since we were able to learn the entire “second half opener” in the first rehearsal. It is so fun, and fairly simple. This means that those of us who are not dancers, like myself, can succeed (have fun and look lovely simultaneously).

After rehearsal we had dinner with the board of directors which turned out to be very casual, in our rehearsal clothes, and catered by Olive Garden. YUM. I sat with Noreen Skagin, the President of the board; our own Miss Washington 2007 Kristen Eddings; Devanni Partridge Miss Auburn, and Megan Hornbuckle Miss Kitsap and my partner in crime. We had some delightful dinner conversation and received great advice!

We even finished dinner with some incredible cheese cake, Tonie it was your favorite kind! I had enough for both of us, don’t worry.

Our evening concluded with a second rehearsal where we managed to learn the majority of the opening number! Debbie’s Dance has done a wonderful job of choreographing these numbers so we look fabulous and can ALL succeed!

Snacks, announcements, and bed time followed.

I am rooming with Miss Rainer, Robyn Suthard and we seem to have a system fairly worked out. Showers and makeup take a great deal of coordination. I am looking forward to tomorrow including our hospital visits and more rehearsals! What a start to the week, and I am already enjoying the adventure.

It's almost time...

Last night was our send off party and it was very special. So many sponsors, family members, and friends showed up to support us.

Megan and I modeled our competition wardrobes and some outfits from our week at the Tacoma Sheraton.

For those of you who are wondering what that week will look like... here goes...

Sunday we arrive and get settled in our rooms form 9:30-10:30
11:30 is the Arrival Ceremony and the Miss WA luncheon where all the past Miss Washington's perform. And then they put us right to work learning the dances.

Monday - Wednesday is spent rehearsing and learning dances in the hotel ballrooms and at the Pantageous Theatre.

We also make an appearance at Children's Hospital and have a dinner with the board of directors.

On the Fourth of July we get released to our parents for most of the day. My folks and I, along with Ben and my sister Tonie are going on a behind the scenes tour of Point Defiance Zoo. It was opened up to contestants and their family and friends as a sponsored event! We will have dinner and enjoy the fourth together. I may try to get a tanning session in too since we are sequestered at the hotel all week. Rub on tan just is not the same. :)

Then on Thursday we have our judges’ interview. Mine is near the very end. I am contestant 20 of 22. So when the morning group is interviewing my group (Beta) will be at the farmer's market) then we will come back to the hotel and I will have a bit of rest time before my interview.

Thursday night consists of the dress rehearsal and in my past experience the atmosphere and the competitiveness all changes after the interviews on Thursday. The ladies get down to business.

Friday we rehearse and all 22 young ladies compete in the preliminary night.

Saturday is rehearsals and the final night of competition. All the ladies perform the opening number and introduce themselves. Then immediately following they announce the top ten who step forward and get ready to compete. They also announce the Miss America Community Service and Academic Awards and "non-finalist talent".

The top ten compete in swimwear, eveningwear and talent. Then they return in their business suits and the top 5 are announced. They top 5 compete in on-stage question and then the judges use a ballot voting system to select the new Miss Washington 2007!

It will be an exciting week and event. In 2005 when I went as Miss Whatcom County I placed in the top ten and got people's choice. So far I have made $11,000 in scholarships and I am always looking to increase that number. I hope to finish paying off my B.A. from Western and have some money for graduate school when I finish on July 8th.

We are on our third week of the pilot program for North Kitsap Adapted Aquatics and it has been a huge success.

While in Missouri we met and watched Madison Burke compete for Miss Missouri's outstanding teen.

And the new Miss Missouri 2007 is....

On June 10th at an "oh so ugly hour of the morning," Megan, Michele and I headed off to Mexico, Missouri.

Michele my director was judging the Miss Missouri's Outstanding Teen Program so Megan and I went along for the ride.

The gist of the 4 day adventure was something I never thought I would ever say, "I was pageanted out." :)

We attended the teen program in the afternoon and then headed to the Miss program at night. We got lucky and the weather was, "cool" and did not exceed 90 degrees. I have no idea how the contestants stayed so lovely through the entire program. The "gymtorium" at the Mexico Military Academy was not air conditioned. And even with my battery operated fan, disguised as a pink "razor" cell phone I was more than toasty. Makeup remained in solid form, and hair was at it's fullest despite the humidity and heat.

We watched the new Miss Missouri 2007 Lindsay Casmaer and the new Miss Missouri's Outstanding Teen 2007 Mary Bauer be crowned and it was exhilarating. I will admit I had picked Lindsay as my favorite from the first time I saw her on the website and Megan (Miss Kitsap can vouch for that). She had to hear about all the reasons why I loved Lindsay all week long. And then... she WON! :) I felt like I won myself.

I got to meet some of Lindsay's family and even got my photo taken with her. The Miss Missouri crew was wonderful, including Kay Lea the Miss Missouri's Outstanding Teen Executive Director who welcomed us with open arms, and of course gave some fabulous insight and advice.

I even got to perform my talent during the teen program. What practice. Thank you Kay Lea for making a space in your program lineup for me.

Overall the week was priceless, I got to know my counterpart - Megan Hornbuckle Miss Kitsap 2007 - even better. We have been friends for almost 10 years with some year apart as we pursued lives beyond Kitsap but we were destined to experience this together and I am lucky to have found a friend in Megan.

On a side note I saw fireflies for the first time! And we discovered Sonic (the burger joint). I couldn't get enough of their strawberry limeade! We also hit up Dillard’s before we headed to the airport and found some incredible steals. Let's just say my wardrobe about tripled!
We had a wonderful time, and is usual on one of these "pageant adventures" I learned a lot about myself.

This was one of the most meaningful events we have done. They raised over $30,000 in one bidding frenzy alone for scholarships for NK High School Students. They raised over $90,000 and Hugh and Brenda purchased Megan and I for an appearance for $1,000 and this was matched by another donor as well!

The far away family and friends have been asking for a way to know what adventures I have had, and am having as Miss Poulsbo 2007.

It seems so strange to me that all I am doing would be of interest, but I will admit... being Miss Poulsbo has been a great adventure with plenty to tell.

The day I became Miss Poulsbo I graduated from Western Washington University and by the look on my face, you can tell how overwhelmed I was. In fact someone once said, "She looks like she swallowed a fly." And that is about how I felt.

The process began that night. I started substitute teaching two days later and set to work on my appearances the very next day. My pageant little sister Molly and her mother were at my very first appearance which was at the beautiful Kiana Lodge for a fundraiser for Martha and Mary.Molly and me just after the momment I was crowned!

I will never get used to the unending support this community continues to extend to me. People have given of themselves and their time to be a part of this process with me.

The arrival ceremony for Miss Washington is in 16 days at the Tacoma Sheraton. We have a week of rehearsals and appearances and then the competition is on July 6th and 7th at the Pantageous Theatre in Tacoma. I am working on current events, I had my first of three mock interviews this past Wednesday, I am working out with a trainer who is literally working my tail off, volunteering with my platform and beyond, fundraising for Children's Miracle Network, and then of course preparing a wardrobe and an overall "look" for my return to Miss Washington.

I have already had the chance to learn and grow so much, what an opportunity this has been.
